Genre
The Gats are in Vilambit and Madhya Laya, followed by ‘Behlava’,
which is a free style composition. ‘Bols’ and ‘Fikres’
follow this in fast tempo and Todas are used. The
performer then renders a Madhya Laya Gat and Sidha Jhala
in conclusion.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan introduced the elements of Khayal on
the Sarod. He also uses fast ‘Ekhara Tans.’ Ustad Amjad
Ali Khan and his sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali
Bangash represent the sixth and seventh generations
respectively, in this respectable lineage.
The other branch is of Murad Ali Khan’s adopted son,
Abdullah Khan and his son, Mohammed Amir Khan. Pt.
Buddhadev Dasgupta, a disciple of Radhika Mohan Moitra,
represents the Murad Ali branch. This branch has preserved
the original Gats of the Sarod. It uses complex Bols and
Diri Diri Tans. The Alap is followed by the Gat and
employs playing the ‘Ladant’, in which only the first two
strings are played.
